We start this first Senior Highlight with a little quiz on who said what- what did each senior say when asked one interesting thing about themselves?
Good luck! - Here is a link to click if you want to open the quiz in a new window.
Attention all you Band Peeps that want to continue being student leaders next year or those of you that are thinking you want to step up to a leadership position!
IT is that time of the school year that we discuss who wants to be a student leader for next school year....
So next week on Wednesday we are going to have a google meeting at 2PM to discuss becoming a student leader. We will talk about the process of becoming a leader, we will discuss what being a leader is all about, we will discuss the positions available, we will discuss Drum Majors, Section Leaders, and everything else!
Let's discuss things like how the application process is going to happen, who you will interview and be interviewed with, how much time it will take you to be a student leader. What are things you can do and not do as a student leader.
We will talk about the training process for the next couple of months and over the summer.
We will talk about how you as one of our student leaders will help shape our band program.
Here is your first job.... Who sticks out in your mind from this school year as being a leader in the band, school, or community? Why did that FIRST person you thought of jump into your mind as soon as you read that question?

As we head into the month of April we have added several opportunities for students to communicate safely with other Band Students as well as new ways for students to continue making music!
NoteFlight Learn is an online music notation app allowing students to compose, create, arrange and work with others on music. NoteFlight also has given access to their Pop and Band libraries opening a slew of content for students to learn and explore.
9th-12th grade students have already been using NoteFlight a bit in class and are all setup and ready to go IF you have already been into our Google Classroom from Tri-mister 2. We have NOT been using the content libraries so those are new.
if 5th-8th graders have the technology to access NoteFlight then we can set them up with access to the FMS Band Google Classroom and NoteFlight. All they really need is a SmartPhone to make this happen. Of course an iPad or computer/laptop will work also.
if you have an iPad, or desktop/laptop then there is another option for students available. SmartMusic is an amazing tool for student to practice with. There are all sorts of exercises, like the 5th and 6th grade Essential Element books as well as more music for them to practice with and explore. Once you are in Google Classroom if you want access to SmartMusic send a message to Mr. Shimmons requesting the access code.
‘’All Parents and students should make sure they are a part of the Remind Messages and the Farwell Band Facebook Group. Remind will become very important as we send out information about the rest of the school year and next fall.
lastly..., you can also find Farwell Bands on Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.
this Website and Blog will be the main location for information to be posted but we will be posting a notice in as many spots as possible when important information is posted here. If you want to know right away when this website is updated then subscribe to the RSS feed to the right and you should get notified through your RSS reader.
Stay safe, Stay Strong and Keep making music!
oh.... and for goodness sakes.... STAY home!
This means that you can now sign in to your school NoteFlight account and access an entire library of Full Concert Band pieces as well as another library of a whole bunch of Pop Tunes! You can see the music for these pieces, you can listen to NoteFlight play the music, you can download a real band playing many of the pieces and you can see YOUR part for the music and you can play along!
If your students are in High School Band they are well on their way to understanding how to access NoteFlight. These libraries are new for them though. It is very exciting that NoteFlight has given us this access!
If you have a student in grades 5th-8th grade and your student has access to a computer/phone/tablet with internet access they can also get access to our School NoteFlight for free! If you would like access for them email Mr. Shimmons and he will get your student set up!
There is a Youtube video to walk you through how to access the libraries. You will find the link to that video at the bottom of this post!
If you are not sure what NoteFlight even is then here is the short version - NoteFlight is an online music notation app that is run by one of the biggest music publishers in America! This means they have access to a ton of music - pop music, band music, jazz, choir and the list goes on and on.
Kids can create their own music using NoteFlight quickly and easily but the new access to these libraries give the students new capabilities never before possible. For instance, a student can find the music for a piece of music like "Happy" by Pharrell Williams and listen to it while they see the music! Then they can edit that music by adding a part for the instrument they play and copying the melody line over into their instrument. Now the student has this piece arranged for their instrument and they can play along! They can edit it so if there are notes that are too high they can lower them. If something is too difficult they can make it easier!
Students can explore new pieces of music that we could possibly perform in our band concert! They could even take a piece of music and arrange it for their instrument and a few of their friends! Who WOULDN'T want to play along to A Charlie Brown Christmas!?!?!?
Click this link - YouTube Video - that gives you an overview of what we now have available to the students!
BONUS TO THE FIRST PERSON WITH THE CORRECT ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION:
What did Mr. Shimmons do wrong in this Video (besides not singing very well!)?
The State Office just informed us that State Band And Orchestra Festival is cancelled for this school year.
so May 2nd schedule is clearer.
I will let you know further info as I find out more info. Everyone is of course unsure about what all will transpire these next three weeks.
